They say, bring a lot of balls and they were right. They were right that the ruff was tuff but the trick is to play conservative shots to the 150 and you'll survive. The greens were slow. The fairways good. From tee to green, a good course. What makes it so special and a must play is the incredible setting, magnificent views and unbelievable feeling that you are at a very special place. I've never taken so many pictures at a single course.
First off, to all those wondering- the first 9 holes are (mostly) back open! Just one hole on the course is still closed, but they have a "3B" to play in its place. They also have BRAND NEW carts!!! This course obviously has STUNNING views, yet pictures just won't ever do it justice. The grass itself is certainly not PGA quality, but I also disagree with other reviews that trash it entirely, it isn't bad. We did however get unlucky as the greens were punched a week ago and they still are sandy and bumpy. I will say it could be a 5 star, but they will need to work on the grass quite a bit in multiple areas, but I can tell that yes, they ARE currently doing that. Staff was super friendly, pro shop was super cheap for a pro shop! They do not however sell mixed drinks, just beers only. That would help with getting a 5 star in my opinion. I'd love to cone here again!
Royal Hawaiian Golf Club – Beautiful Setting, Poor Execution ⭐⭐ (2/5) Played here yesterday and left genuinely disappointed given what this course charges. Let me be balanced — the scenery is absolutely stunning, one of the most beautiful settings I’ve played in. The on-course staff were friendly and the course itself has real potential. That’s where the positives end. The front nine — the most scenic half of the course — had been closed for over a month due to rain damage. No mention of this anywhere prior to arrival, no discount offered, no apology. We found out when we got there. That’s a transparency problem, full stop. The greens had been advertised as punched on the 6th of the month, but the condition we found them in looked more like they’d been done the day before — nowhere near recovered. No acknowledgment of this, no rate adjustment. At this price, that’s not acceptable. Cart path only all day due to moisture, which is understandable in isolation, but three separate condition issues with zero compensation or communication starts to feel like a pattern. Front desk staff arrived late for our first tee time and weren’t exactly gracious when we raised concerns. The on-course crew were a different story — genuinely warm and helpful — so the issue is clearly at the management level. The round itself started fine — we had the early tee time and had the back nine to ourselves. Second loop we started running into groups stacking up, and the pace crawled. Got the impression they were just letting walk-ups go out with no wave management. One couple mentioned they were charged $80 just to ride along on what was a dead day. That’s a tough sell. At this price point, you’re paying for a premium experience. What we got was a visually gorgeous course being managed like a tourist checkbox. The lack of transparency about conditions, the no-discount policy regardless of what’s closed or compromised, and the inconsistent front desk experience make it hard to recommend — especially to serious golfers. Come for the views if you must, but go in with zero expectations about the operation.
It was raining on and off so it was cart path only. The rough isn’t really grass—it’s more like weeds—and the ground became very muddy, so my bag, clubs, and clothes got quite dirty. They also didn’t provide any complimentary water, and the staff didn’t feel particularly welcoming. Because of the rain, holes 1 through 9 were closed, so we ended up playing the back nine twice. It might be a better experience on a nice day. The course is surrounded by lush, dense trees, so it seems like it would be quite enjoyable in dry, sunny conditions.
Super tough course. Tropical storm during week we were travelling here. Only back 9 was open so we were able to play back 9 twice. Scenery is majestic and overrides the little details of the course which could be maintained better. Even if you are a decent golfer, be prepared to lose some balls!
